The Reluctant Dragon - A Dramatic Family Musical Entertainment
Saturday 8 August, two shows: 4:00 pm and 7:30 pm
Otago Boys High School, 2 Arthur St, Littlebourne, Dunedin
A dragon the size of four cart horses has appeared in a cave, and the villagers call on St George to rid them of the terrible beast. But this is a far from ordinary dragon, and he wants to fight St George even less than St George wants to fight him. What can they do? Based on a whimsical children’s story by Kenneth Grahame, our production of John Rutter’s lively musical version features some of Dunedin’s most promising young soloists (and City Choir Dunedin as the villagers), in a dramatic presentation both on stage and throughout the auditorium, with spectacular use of costuming and props, and accompaniment by players from the Dunedin Youth Orchestra.
This family-orientated performance will also include other musical stories from Rutter’s tuneful oeuvre: City Choir will sing Five Childhood Lyrics - a brief set of choral songs based on children’s rhymes, and the Youth Orchestra strings will perform his Suite for String Orchestra which features traditional English folk tunes. The music and stories will be linked together for the audiences by the narrator.
