The Last Night of the Proms

Thursday 7 March 7:30pm, Regent Theatre

The Last Night of the Proms - one of the most popular music events in Dunedin will be a musical celebration of the England vs. New Zealand Cricket Test from March 6-10 in Dunedin. With close to 170 musicians on stage, the programme will showcase a very wide range of popular classical music performed by outstanding musicians from Dunedin and around New Zealand. Presented by Southern Sinfonia. City Choir Dunedin provides choral support.

Nature's Bounty
Saturday 23 March 7:30pm, Knox Church

The Choir has commissioned New Zealander Christopher Marshall to write a new choral work to mark our anniversary year. For What Can Be More Beautiful? uses texts extolling the wonders of nature, including one by an early Dunedin seed merchant, which gives the piece a distinctive Otago flavour.

Complementing this will be the Choir’s evocative and colourful 1988 commission by Jack Speirs, Cantico del Sole, the ‘Canticle of the Sun’ based on words by St Francis of Assisi.

Celebrating the Choir’s musical heritage we will perform the Victorian masterpiece Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. This oratorio describing the splendours of an American-Indian banquet rivalled Messiah and Elijah in popularity amongst English-speaking choirs in the early decades of the 20th century and was performed at least three times by the Dunedin Choral Society.

These three works combine to create a musical palette which is contemporary, dramatic and romantic – and is a great way for us to begin our year-long celebration.

The Choir is thrilled to have been invited by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra to perform one of the greatest works in the choral repertoire, Verdi’s Messa da Requiem. Not only are we performing this huge, powerful and moving work with the NZSO in Dunedin, but the Choir will also travel with the orchestra to the other main centres, and join with Auckland Choral Society, The Orpheus Choir of Wellington and Christchurch City Choir in their respective performances.

The Choir performed the Verdi Requiem during our Centenary in 1963, so this opportunity is a very fitting 150th celebration.

Mozart’s Great Mass, composed in Vienna in 1782 but premièred in Salzburg in 1783, has been described as having “dark-toned and solemn, [and also] forthright and vigorous choruses, sumptuous solo arias, and ensembles of ornate, operatic radiance.” With our four soloists (all trained in Dunedin) and Southern Youth Choir, we celebrate City Choir Dunedin’s 150th anniversary year.

City Choir Celebrates 150

Labour Weekend sees the Choir in party mood. We invite you to join us in our celebrations including the launch of the Choir’s History, a dinner and church service. The highlight of the weekend will be a gala evening of Choral Masterpieces, sung by an augmented Choir.

Handel's Messiah

150 years ago, Messiah was the first oratorio to be performed in Dunedin, on Christmas Eve 1863, so Handel’s masterpiece provides a fitting finale to City Choir’s 150th anniversary year. Performed around the world during the Christmas season, Messiah is the most-performed major choral work of all time. It is greatly appreciated, admired and enjoyed.

City Choir Dunedin with the Southern Sinfonia, conducted by David Burchell, is pleased to perform this oratorio again this year. We are delighted to welcome home Jonathan Lemalu (bass) for this performance and together with Lois Johnston (soprano), Amanda Cole (mezzo), and David Hamilton (tenor), we will provide a fantastic opportunity for you to experience a world-class live delivery of this dramatic and passionate work. This will be a performance to inspire, uplift and enrich the soul.

Beauty of Baroque

City Choir Dunedin presents the grandeur and exuberance of the pearls of Baroque music.

Bach: Magnificat (BWV 243)
Handel: Utrecht Te Deum and Organ Concerto Op. 4 no. 2 in B Flat
Charpentier: Laetatus sum

The programme includes the breathtaking Magnificat composed by J.S. Bach in 1723. The impact of this great choral work derives essentially from Bach’s remarkable ability to balance, yet at the same time to exploit to the full, the spiritual and dramatic elements of the concise text of the Magnificat. It is a sublime pearl from an era rich in choral glory.

Stephen Chambers (tenor), recently described as having a “beautiful lyrical tenor voice”, is in Dunedin on a rare visit home. This is an opportunity to witness his progress on the international stage.

The Baroque is a period and the style that used exaggerated motion and clear, easily interpreted detail to produce drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, painting, literature, dance, and music. The style started around 1600 in Rome, Italy and spread to most of Europe. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word baroque is derived from the Portuguese word "barroco", Spanish "barroco", or French "baroque", all of which refer to a "rough or imperfect pearl".

Magpie, Song and Dance

City Choir Dunedin and the Dunedin Youth Orchestra, conducted by David Burchell, are pleased to present a concert of romantic music ranging from somewhat melancholy to excitingly vibrant moods and soaring melodies.

The programme will include Rossini's Thieving Magpie, Brahms' Song of Destiny, Borodin's Polovetsian Dances (from Prince Igor), Sibelius' Karelia Suite, and Mozart's Concerto in A for Clarinet with young soloist Nicole Batchelar, who is now in the third year of a B.Mus. focusing on conducting and composition.

The Journey Home
Saturday 8 September, 8:00pm at Regent Theatre

City Choir Dunedin joins the Southern Sinfonia and conductor Simon Over for the world première performance of John Drummond's new oratorio The Journey Home, in their Tales of Ice and Fire concert.


The Journey Home tells the tale of Scott’s ill-fated Antarctic expedition, and this performance marks the tragedy’s centenary. Texts are by Jeremy Commons, Claire Benyon, Bill Manhire, Chris Orsman, and from the Book of Common Prayer. Jenny Wollerman (soprano) is acknowledged for her exquisite tone and compelling performances; James Rodgers (tenor), from Wellington, now based in New York, returns after his highly-praised 2009 Haydn performance with us, and Robert Tucker (bass baritone) returns from Scottish Opera success.

Rossini, the 19th century Italian composer, was known for his sense of humour. So it is that his Petite Messe Solennelle is neither little, nor solemn. Although of a sacred nature, it is unmistakably operatic in style, abounding in memorable tunes and rhythmic vitality. It is an elegant and refined work. 

Messiah Sing-along

City Choir Dunedin presents the ever-green oratorio, Messiah, as a sing-along event. We invite the audience to add their voices to this performance and to experience, first-hand, the glory of this music composed by Handel. The performance will be conducted by Peter Adams, with David Burchell on the organ, Ron Caldwell and Ralph Miller on trumpets, and Mark Anderson on timpani.

The Southern Sinfonia presents this annual Proms concert at which the City of Dunedin Choir provides the choral support. Featuring a dazzling line-up: Conductor Hamish McKeich with soloist Anna Leese and the City of Dunedin Choir, and introducing Miles Chen, Cello, and Chris Geddes, Composer.

The Choir performed "Laudate Dominum" from Mozart's Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, and "Arrival of the Guests" from Richard Wagner's Tannhauser.

Bach's Mass in B minor

The City of Dunedin Choir, supported by the Southern Sinfonia and conducted by David Burchell, presents Bach's Mass in B Minor. The soloists for this performance are:

The Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) is a musical setting of the complete Latin Mass by Johann Sebastian Bach. The work was one of Bach's last, although much of it was made of music that Bach had composed earlier. Bach assembled the Mass in its present form in 1749, just before his death in 1750.

Dane Lam, Conductor, Paul Whelan, Bass Baritone, and City of Dunedin Choir perform in this concert presented by the Southern Sinfonia.

Drama in Babylon! The king commits sacrilege and is miraculously killed, the kingdom falls, and the Jews regain their freedom. This strongly rhythmic and richly orchestrated work, with soloist and choir, has remained one of Walton's most celebrated compositions. By contrast, Appalachian Spring depicts a happy celebration of the American pioneers, and includes a section based on a well-known Shaker melody. "Unlike many bass voices, Paul Whelan's is a wondrously flexible (voice)... that most other basses would give their eye teeth to emulate." Wellingtonian Paul won the 1993 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, and since then has appeared at the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the New York Metropolitan Opera and English National Opera. Talented young Australian conductor Dane Lam set the orchestra and audience alight at his Dunedin début concert last year. Expect a thrilling and inspired performance!

Claire Barton Farewells Dunedin

In September 2011 Claire will begin study towards a Post Graduate Artist Diploma at Trinity Laban in London. Before she leaves she is performing in a fundraising concert with proceeds going towards fees, travel and living costs.

Expect an evening full of entertainment from some of Dunedin’s best performers including Claire Barton, mezzo-soprano, the City of Dunedin Choir, the Dunedin RSA Choir, pianist Julia Horsnell, and many more.

It is paired with a specially-commissioned new work by Gareth Farr, revered among today’s composers for his ability to conjure spectacular and magical sound-worlds, with words by Witi Ihimaera. Messiah (HWV 56) is an English-language oratorio composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel, with a scriptural text compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. It was first performed in Dublin on 13 April 1742, and received its London premiere nearly a year later. After an initially modest public reception the oratorio gained in popularity, eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. For over 260 years people of different religious persuasions have enjoyed this grand choral work.

The Southern Sinfonia presents this annual Proms concert at which the City of Dunedin Choir provides the choral support. This year's concert featured sopranos Deborah Wai Kapohe and Rebecca Ryan. The Master of Ceremonies was David McPhail and the Conductor was Kenneth Young. The Choir performed 'Hymn and Triumphal March' from Aida by Verdi.

Sunday 28 March, Dunedin Town Hall :: St John Passion

The City of Dunedin Choir, supported by the Southern Sinfonia and conducted by David Burchell, presented Bach's Easter story, the St John Passion. The soloists were tenor Paul McMahon (the Evangelist), Lois Johnston (soprano), Claire Barton (alto), Oliver Sewell (tenor), Chris Bruerton (bass) and Howard Harvey (in the role of Christ).

The City of Dunedin Choir, conducted by David Burchell, presented a concert of a varied collection of little-known motets and part-songs by French composers from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, as appetizers to one of the most enduring French choral works, Gabriel Fauré's Requiem. The City of Dunedin Choir, conducted by David Burchell, presented this concert which will included Zimbe!: Come, sing the songs of Africa! by Alexander L'Estrange, and the five Negro spirituals from Tippet's oratorio A Child of our Time. City of Dunedin Choir was joined by St Paul's Catherdal Choristers and the Southern Children's Choir for this performance. Soprano Goeknil Meryem-Biner made a guest appearance.

The City of Dunedin Choir and the Southern Sinfonia join forces in this Dunedin Heritage Festival concert entitled Southern Stars, Celebrating the Life, Times and Works of Frances Hodgkins, starring actress Rima Te Wiata and soprano Deborah Wai-Kapohe. The conductor is Marc Taddei.
The Choir performs Serenade to Music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and an extract from Anthony Richie's From the Southern Marches.

The soloists were soprano Rebecca Ryan, alto Claire Barton, tenor James Rodgers and baritone Jared Holt. The conductor was Simon Over.

The Southern Sinfonia presents this annual concert at which the City of Dunedin Choir always provides the choral support. This year's concert features Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, Soprano Emma Fraser, Pianist Stephen Martin, City of Dunedin Choir and St Kilda Brass Band. The Compere is Garrick Tremain and the Conductor is Peter Adams.

The choir performs the Griffiths/Ritchie songs Princess Street and Drums, Drums, Drums from From The Southern Marches, and Benedictus from The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins.

Saturday 24 March 2007, Dunedin Town Hall :: Equator - Circle of Life

The City of Dunedin Choir provides the choral support in the Southern Sinfonia's Southern Pride Concert. The choir opens the concert with O Fortuna from Orff's Carmina Burana, and provides the choral support for soprana Anna Leese in the Intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavaleria Rusticana. The second half of the concert features the City of Dunedin Choir, Soprano Cally Hammond-Tooke and Trevor Coleman's symphony composed for NHNZ's film and presented as Equator - Circle of Life. The conductors are Peter Adams and David Burchell.

Saturday 8 September 2007, Dunedin Town Hall :: The Dream of Gerontius

The Dream of Gerontius, opus 38, composed by Sir Edward Elgar, is an oratorio based on the poem by Cardinal Henry Newman about a man's journey to death, judgement and beyond. This performance was produced by the City of Dunedin Choir, directed by David Burchell, and marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Elgar. The Dunedin performance also included the Southern Consort of Voices, the St Paul's Cathedral Choir, Helen Medlyn (mezzo soprano) David Hamilton (tenor) and David Griffiths (bass). The Southern Sinfonia provided the musical support.

Tuesday 11 December 2007, Dunedin Town Hall :: Messiah

Messiah, the oratorio composed by George Frideric Handel in 1741, is his most famous creation and is among the most popular works in the Western choral literature. This performance of Messiah was produced by the City of Dunedin choir directed by David Burchell. Soloists: Anna Leese (soprano), Kate Spence (alto), John Murray (tenor) and David Griffiths (bass). The Southern Sinfonia provided the musical support.
