Biography for Simon Mace, Organist

Simon Mace is currently studying towards obtaining a Bachelor of Music majoring in Classical Music Performance and Composition at the University of Otago. He commenced organ lessons in October 2008 under the tutelage of Michael Cox at Taranaki Cathedral. He was the inaugural Organ Scholar from 2009-2011, and played a major role as one of the organists for the Cathedral’s consecration.

In 2010 Simon attended ‘The Oundle for Organists’ course in England, where he received tuition from some of Europe’s finest teacher’s. He also attended ‘The Organ Scholar Experience’, a course run by the RCO Academy, and he was invited to perform in the student platform concert at St. John’s College, Cambridge.

In February of 2011 Simon began studying organ performance at the University of Otago under the tutelage of David Burchell. In June 2011 Simon was placed 2nd in the ORGANZ Organ Performance Competition, a competition which he had previously entered twice and been placed 2nd equal (2010) and 3rd (2009).

Simon was recently selected for the Jennie Macandrew prize in Music based on his academic performance at the University of Otago in 2011. He also held the position of Organ Scholar at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Dunedin, in 2011. Simon sings with several Dunedin choirs and is becoming established as a young composer. He hopes to gain a professional position in church music and further his ability in composition.
