Biography for Julien van Mellaerts, Bass

Julien is originally from Northland, but has now settled in Dunedin. In 2010 he graduated from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Music, First Class Honours, and a Bachelor of Arts in French. Last year he started working part-time as an itinerant Singing and Piano Teacher throughout Dunedin whilst studying his own singing privately.

In 2009 and 2010 he was the runner-up in the ODT Aria competition, as well as the runner-up in the Christchurch Aria competition in 2010. At the end of last year Julien won the prize for Most Promising Voice at the New Zealand Aria Competition, held in Rotorua. He was a finalist in Auckland’s North Shore Aria Competition (2012) and the Nelson Aria Competition (2012), and was awarded the Most Promising Singer at the Napiers Aria Competition (2012). 2012 was a busy year for Julien, featuring as the baritone soloist with several prestigious choirs nationwide. He also recently sang the role of Bartolo in The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart) with Opera Otago.

Julien is currently studying towards a Master of Music in Performance Voice under Flora Edwards and Professor Terence Dennis at the University of Otago. He hopes to pursue an international singing career.
